Why training on older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) adults? Statistics indicate that many older LGBTQ+ adults are going back "in the closet" and are invisible to their health care provider or those that provide services to aging adults. Many are fearful, based on past history, of how they will be treated. Consider that in Pierce County there are approximately 10,000 LGBTQ+ older adults age 50 and older.
We know that you, as a provider, want to provide the best care and/or services to all your patients and clients. We help you increase you and your staff's LGBTQ+ cultural competency. Gen Silent, one of the best documentaries on aging LGBTQ+ older adults, will be shown and discussed. We will provide you with LGBTQ+ cultural history and how it impacts their present well being. We also provide you with tools for working with older LGBTQ+ adults. This is a trainee participation training. For additional information or to schedule training for your organization, contact us at [email protected] and ask about the training package "Older LGBTQ+ Aging 101." |
"Thanks for giving me "tools", I never thought about the fears of older LGBT people. I never thought that I might have to ask different questions like "who is important to you", "who is your partner in life" - trainee
"If we are not out and our voices are not heard, then who is going to know what the needs of LGBT seniors are?" John Feather "You guys did a great job! I have been in this field for 20 years and this is the first LGBT training. Thank you!" - Pierce County ADR trainee
